报告摘要(ABSTRACT):

 

Visual computing, traditionally, is a generic term for all computer science disciplines dealing with various types of visual data including images, videos, and other types of visual data. Over the past few decades, visual computing has witnessed its paradigm-shifting evolution from pure algorithm development to overall system design. This talk shall start with an analysis of the evolution of contemporary visual computing systems from several systematic perspectives. Such analysis shall be closely coupled with the chronological reflection of my career journey over the past 40 years. At the beginning of my academic career in the 1980s and 1990s, visual computing research was mostly carried out as algorithm development for processing and analyzing a single modality of visual data. During the 2000s, my research shifted to the integrated design of algorithms and systems, when pursuing trailblazing research in joint source and channel coding for wireless video and large-scale wireless sensor networks. During the 2010s, my research has focused on human-centric mobile visual computing systems in which both mobile device constraints and human perception principles need to be carefully balanced at the system level design to achieve desired quality-of-experiences (QoE) when massive consumers are using smartphones and other portable devices for both working and personal purposes. In recent years, my research in contemporary visual computing has evolved beyond conventional visual computing by embracing multimodal artificial intelligent systems as exampled by the Internet of Video Things (IoVT) and vision-language integration via Large Language Model (LLM) for the 6G semantic communications.


报告人简介(BIOGRAPHY):

 

Chang Wen Chen is currently Chair Professor of Visual Computing and Interim Dean of the Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He is also an Empire Innovation Professor Emeritus at the State University of New York at Buffalo (SUNY) where he served from 2008 to 2021 Before his current position, he served as Dean of the School of Science and Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen from 2017 to 2020, and concurrently as Deputy Director at Peng Cheng Laboratory from 2018 to 2021. He was Allan Henry Endowed Chair Professor at the Florida Institute of Technology from 2003 to 2007. He received his BS from the University of Science and Technology of China in 1983, an MSEE from the University of Southern California in 1986, and a PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (UIUC) in 1992. Among his many leadership positions in IEEE and ACM, he has served as an Editor-in-Chief for IEEE Trans. Multimedia (2014-2016) and for IEEE Trans. Circuits and Systems for Video Technology (2006-2009). He has received many professional achievement awards, including ten (10) Best Paper Awards or Best Student Paper Awards, the prestigious Alexander von Humboldt Award in 2010, the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities in 2016, the UIUC ECE Distinguished Alumni Award in 2019, and the ACM SIGMM Outstanding Technical Achievements Award in 2024. He is an IEEE Fellow, a SPIE Fellow, and a Member of Academia Europaea.
